Annapurna Pictures has released the first trailer for a Sundance Film Festival favorite that was shot in Syracuse.
“On the Count of Three,” the directorial debut from standup comedian Jerrod Carmichael, follows two best friends with guns and a pact to end their lives before the day is over. Val (Carmichael) and Kevin (Christopher Abbott) decide to first settle unfinished business and get revenge on a psychologist (Henry Winkler) who traumatized Kevin as a child before shooting each other (on the count of three).
The red-band trailer includes a serious warning that the movie discusses mental health and suicide, but it also features humorous exchanges and interesting music choices like Travis Tritt’s “It’s a Great Day to Be Alive” and Papa Roach’s “Last Resort.”
“No… You can’t listen to music that exactly describes the emotional thing you’re going through,” says Carmichael. “You know how cheesy that is? I don’t listen to Alanis Morissette when I’m going through a breakup and I’m not listening to Papa f—ing Roach on the day I’m going to kill myself.”
The cast also features Tiffany Haddish (”Girls Trip”) as Carmichael’s girlfriend and J.B. Smoove (”Curb Your Enthusiasm”) as his father.
“On the Count of Three,” written by “Ramy” screenwriters Ari Katcher and Ryan Welch, drew rave reviews when it premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival and won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award in the U.S. drama. Annapurna acquired the North American rights in a deal reportedly worth around $2 million.
The movie was largely filmed in Canada, but shot scenes in Syracuse and on the Onondaga Lake Parkway in Liverpool in 2020. It was one of the first film productions in Central New York after the coronavirus pandemic shut down the state and filming was allowed to resume with Covid-19 restrictions.
“We just did it very quietly — kept it safe and got it done,” Carmichael told Vulture last year. “I personally loved it. I think all sets should keep Covid protocol far beyond the pandemic. Like, the amount of quiet and focus on set? It was what I hear Coen brothers’ sets are like. It was peaceful! It eliminates 80 percent of small talk; people have gloves on so they can’t be on their phones — all these little things that are incredible for the creative process, where we’re all focused on the thing. Also, I think every set should be required to play the Tom Cruise rant at the start of every production. That would be very inspiring.”
Carmichael, whose credits include “Transformers: The Last Knight” and “Neighbors,” has released several stand-up comedy specials and starred in his own TV series, “The Carmichael Show.” He also drew widespread praise for his coming out story in the HBO special “Rothaniel,” released earlier this month.
“On the Count of Three” will be released in select theaters and on digital May 13.
