Top Gun: Maverick Early Reactions Overwhelmingly Praise Cruise’s Movie – Screen Rant

The first non-spoiler reactions to the Tom Cruise-led Top Gun: Maverick are here and critics are saying that it’s the perfect Top Gun sequel.
The first reactions to Top Gun: Maverick are finally here. Tom Cruise’s much-anticipated sequel to the 1986 Top Gun film is set to hit theaters in roughly a month. Several critics are able to screen the film early, giving fans an idea of what to expect from the upcoming blockbuster.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Top Gun: Maverick has been delayed multiple times, much like almost every Hollywood production. As its release date inches near, however, Paramount has been actively promoting the sequel directed by Joseph Kosinski. Specific plot details for the film are still tightly under wraps, but it will see Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell training a new crop of Navy pilots at TOPGUN for a special mission. Among his students is Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Miles Teller) — the son of Mitchell’s former RIO, Nick “Goose” Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards), who isn’t too thrilled about his dad’s old flying partner. Aside from Cruise, Val Kilmer will also reprise his role as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in Top Gun: Maverick. But unlike Maverick, who’s still a lowly Captain, Iceman has been able to climb the ranks in the Navy.

It’s an understatement to say that there’s massive anticipation for Top Gun: Maverick. Aside from the iconic original film, much has also been said about the film’s rigorous production which involved the cast even learning how to actually fly planes, not to mention the minimal use of CGI. Check out the initial response for the movie below:
One word: Wow! #TopGunMaverick is absolutely terrific in every conceivable way. The action & flying is crazy intense & continually changes & evolves. You’re on the edge of your seat. I was not prepared for how emotional it was, too. The crowd cheered a dozen times. It’s real deal pic.twitter.com/G1dacuZctz
Absolutely loved #TopGunMaverick. Blown away by the cinematography and flying scenes and of course @TomCruise’s performance. Rest of the cast was great with special props to @Miles_Teller and @glenpowell. This is the kind of movie you want to see on the biggest screen possible. pic.twitter.com/PIfs2aGi2v
Just saw #TopGunMaverick at #CinemaCon – goodness gracious. Might be the best movie in 10 years. Thrills & chills, tears & cheers. @TomCruise is unparalleled. It exceeds anything you could imagine. EXTRAORDINARILY tense. PERFECTION. @Miles_Teller crushes. @TopGunMovie #TopGun pic.twitter.com/ScKj9pctHS
Top Gun Maverick is going to completely blow away fans of the original and may even make some new ones along the way. Truthfully, even though the plot is very dependent on that of the original, I found the film to be better than the original in almost every way. #TopGunMaverick pic.twitter.com/t7P4VLxMeU
THAT..WAS..AWESOME! One of the best things you’ll see on the big screen this year.., or ANY year! Thank you @TomCruise (and crew)! @TopGunMovie #worththewait #TopGunMaverick #TomCruise @ParamountPics pic.twitter.com/TBjAtZisUg
#TopGunMaverick is a profound cinematic experience and easily the best film of the year. What Kosinski, @chrismcquarrie, @eddiehamilton and of course @TomCruise have accomplished is epic and intimate, heart stopping and heartbreaking. However good you think it’ll be, it’s better. pic.twitter.com/gZ75xQYxDs
#TopGunMaverick is the perfect ‘Top Gun’ sequel. It’s everything you want in a movie. https://t.co/lfCLO3xqcZ
It’s clear that everyone who was able to catch Top Gun: Maverick at CinemaCon enjoyed it immensely. The stunts and action set pieces were long expected to be great considering Cruise’s commitment to that aspect of moviemaking. But, it’s interesting that critics are also praising the sequel’s heartfelt story. Understandably, these posts don’t delve into plot spoilers since the embargo for reviews is still in effect. But it sounds as if the heart of the story goes back to what went down in the original Top Gun film. This means that while Top Gun: Maverick will be great for the general viewing audience who love a great time in cinemas, the film will be more special for those who have loved the 1986 cult classic.
While these are just initial reactions for Top Gun: Maverick and are not a concrete indication of how successful it will be at the box office, the good word of mouth will help entice more people to catch it in theaters when it premieres. But, if the film becomes a commercial hit, it’s curious if a third installment in the budding Top Gun franchise is already waiting to be announced. Paramount has a tried and tested property on their hands, it’s difficult to imagine that they aren’t going to capitalize on it if there’s interest in it from the public.

Accidental movie and TV fan who is perpetually curious, Ana rekindled her love for writing and married it with everything pop culture. The result is a passionate writer who could ramble (and of course, pen) about films and series multiple hours a day. She has a soft spot for procedurals and old sitcoms (The Golden Girls!) but won’t dare watch any horror films although she’s (ironically) dying to see one. Though a bit late to the party and was an actual Force non-believer, she now finds the Star Wars franchise quite fascinating (fun fact: it was a crazy Jar Jar Binks/Sith theory that drew her in).
